Changes and the future
Changes in Yellow Sheep River:
Hu is the one who has experienced most of the changes in Yellow Sheep
River---from villagers saw the outside world through the first computer
and the setting up of the five-star hotel to going out to work. A lot
of changes have taken place. In Hu’s eyes they are mainly in three aspects:
Firstly villagers got changes in thoughts. Several years ago, if a foreigner
came, it would be a piece of shocking news to all the people, but now
they have been got used to it. Children even chatted with foreigners in
English. In the past no one would believe it if the labor department looked
for workers for other places. But since the establishment of Digital Center,
people voluntarily seek for the opportunity of working outside. Secondly
villagers have learned to do business. For example, in the past the embroidered
shoes cushions were the gifts to the visitors and the villagers were proud
of doing this. Now the cushions have become a commodity. No one is willing
to give it to you for nothing. Finally is the change in lifestyle. In
winter, people liked to chat and gossip under the sunlight. Now some participate
in the project West Talents for the East, some work in the International
Convention Center, some do business in town and some operate recreating
places like small cinema and billiards room. In addition, most of the
villagers now depend on e-business to sell their agricultural products.
Changes in villagers’ attitude toward Hu:
‘With the changes in recent years, people have drawn more attention to
me and they give me a lot of support. It makes me to have a better cooperation
with Town and Talent. For example, when I go through the formality in
police station, the staff’s is very patient. The trust of local educational
department and support from media really impress me. Actually, what makes
me pleased mostly is the expansion of our school and more students can
graduate.’ Hu said with the simple and honest smile.
The most touching thing:
‘Too many things are unforgettable, like teaching villagers surfing internet,
seeking help for students who could not pay for tuition and recruiting
for Chengda Shoes. All these things have helped me to become more mature.
What impressed me most was help the villagers sell aweto products that
are very important to the villagers. If they were cheated they would be
bankrupt. It was really a hard job to convince them. But I feel very satisfactory.
It is the most touching is that I, an ordinary teacher, can gain trust
from my villagers.
Future:
‘Now I feel I bear more responsibilities not only for my students, my
career but all the people in Yellow Sheep River. I expect more people
support us and pay more attention to us. I believe Yellow Sheep River
has a better future.’
The interview was over and Hu left in a hurry. He was to prepare for
the recruitment of tomorrow. To catch the train, he even did not have
the dinner. His honest smile is still in my mind. I believe that the transformation
of Yellow Sheep River does attribute to the sacrifice of so many people
like Hu who are striving for the development of their hometown.
