Coming to Yellow Sheep River(2)
What is Town and Talent?
Town and Talent is a grand project put forward by Mr. Wen. It aims at, within 10 years, establishing 1,000 member schools that are covering all the western regions and training 10,000 software programmers so that the western areas can keep up with the east in knowledge, income and living condition by means of distant employment and retaining the local talents. This is a strategy integrating the comprehension of IT era into the care for the west. Together with this project is Mr. Wen's idea of establishing the International Convention Center at Yellow Sheep River. The five-star hotel was designed to be an example of 'Internet Villages', but after Mr. Wen passed away, the project lost its first promoter. Now the Center has been established, but can it become a real internet village? And it is even doubtable whether it can be operated smoothly. After Mr. Wen left us, what is Town and Talent is all we concern about and a question puzzling us. And that is the main reason I decide to come to Yellow Sheep River.
In my opinion, Town and Talent is a platform of helping the western people enhance their ability of gaining knowledge and viability, established by Mr. Wen with his vision and resources of finance, knowledge, social activities and relationship. The plan of 1,000 member schools and 10,000 software programmers is probably adjusted when practicing, and the measure of its success is not the number, but its influence on the late generation' s further promotion of the western development via the internet.
After Mr. Wen's death, Town and Talent underwent great difficulties and
changes. But led by Mr. Kenny Lin the company didn't fall apart and is
being transformed. The special enterprise bears responsibility of promoting
western development and spares no effort to make contributions. It provides
pure public-benefit service that is not sponsored by government, attracts
but not depends on donation and carries on the cause with its profit.
Its loftiness and hardship make me have too many concerns: Can this enterprise
undertaking the great and rough cause succeed in transforming? Can its
platform have vitality and more participants? How will the western people
respond? Will it be just a unilateral action from Taiwan and East of Chinese
mainland or an interacting platform? How will it operate without Mr. Wen?
Before I started off, Mr. Kenny Lin gave me some introduction about Town
and Talent. My colleagues made arrangement for me. I visited Yangguo Town
Middle School, a member school in Weinan Shaangxi Province. My son accompanied
me and he would become a volunteer there from next term. We set out from
Xian, passed Lanzhou and arrived at Gulang Town. On August 1, we arrived
at Yellow Sheep River.
