The establishment of project "The giant panda peace envoy" was based on the history of China's successful panda diplomacy. Through the investigations and interviews, we have learnt the basic information of Ningshan giant panda nature reserve. Ningshan County is located on the south of the middle section of Tsinling Mountains, featured with subtropical mild climate. With a forest coverage rate of 86%, the mountains are the transition zone of north-south climate in China, as well as the watershed of Yangtze River and Yellow River. There are 1,178 species of seed plants in the nature reserve, including 27 sorts of wild plants under national key protection, such as Chinese yew and abies chensiensis van tiegh. There are 6,278 hectares of bamboo forests, providing rich food for giant pandas. There are also 273 sorts of terrestrial wild animal habituating in, including 33 sorts of animals under national key protection, such as giant panda, golden monkey, budorcas taxicolor, moschus berezovskii, goral and swan. Ningshan has become the living paradise for the national treasure, the giant pandas.
Ningshan giant panda nature reserve was established in 2001 in Ningshan County, primarily for protecting the giant pandas and their habitat. It is a place featured with gorgeous mountains and ravines, and with different treasured animals living in. Covering a total of 26,732 hectares, the nature reserve is like a green jewel embedded on south of the middle section of Tsinling Mountains.
This activity helped us to further realize the reason of the giant panda is also known as "peace envoy" and "commercial counselor." Panda is China's national treasure, symbolizing and representing China; Panda is also of certain political significance that can narrow the distances among countries, promote friendship and mutual development; Panda is very gentle, and is symbolic of peace and solidarity; Giving pandas to Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan as gifts is to promote cross-strait communication and strengthen people's solidarity; "Panda diplomacy" is akin to the "ping pong diplomacy," is an important diplomatic approach for Chinese government.
As a representative of the world's endangered specie that under protection, the giant pandas are of scientific and ecological values, also of moral, ethical and other connotations. Mankind’s evolvement and progress of social civilization go along with and progress of the whole nature. Giant panda has existed on earth when man kind was early ancient apes. It is not the strongest of the species that survive, or the most intelligent, but the one most responsive to change. How have the giant pandas survived up till now? This has been a mystery. The value of the giant panda is inestimable in term of science. If this species are extinct, it would cost a lot for all mankind. For the world where we live, is not just of human beings. All the living things are exerting all of their powers for survival and procreation by searching for food and eating. But human beings still bear a mission to save the world.
