Background of the Project
|
Sichuan Province has been famous as "Land of Abundance"since the ancient times which has very close relationship with the Dujiangyan Project in Chengdu Plain. Prior to its construction, devastating annual floods plagued the people who lived by the Min River. Originated in the west of Sichuan Province, and a major stream of the Changjiang river, Min River carries a lot of silts which block the waterway. In addition, the snow melted from the nearby mountains in every spring and summer made matters worse. The local people had to leave their homes and try to escape. After floods, droughts always occurred due to the silt blocks. According to the historical records, in 206 B.C., Qin official Li Bing, who was sent to Chengdu as its magistrate, decided to do something about this. He investigated the river with some locals, and finally managed to built the Dujiangyan Project which was used in both discharge of the water and irrigation of the farmlands. It is located on the west of Chengdu Plain, where Chengdu Plain and Min River just meet each other.
