My
childhood was spent in animpoverished rural villagein Taiwan in 1950s.It
was a time of immense hardship marked by lighting oil lamps, catching
glowworms, and fetching well water. However, I witnessed the progress
of Taiwan's economic development as the island transformed from great
poverty to great wealth. I was able to demonstrate his concern for the
future of Taiwan and mainland China by drawing on his business acuity.
Graduating from college, I became an engineer in electronic factory and
the president when I was 24 years old. In the next year, I was the general
manager of Kinpo Electronics, whose affiliate company
-- Compal -- is now the world's second largest made-to-order notebook
PC maker. Because of business, I have traveled to 43 countries. After
50 years old, I retired from active daily business and proceeded to found
the Tomorrow Workroom in conjunction with famous cartoonist, Mr. Cai Zhi-Zhong.
I deeply believed that culture was the very heartbeat of the nation, and
that technology must form the foundation of new culture.
I think I am a lucky person. Born in rural area, I
have the chance to demonstrate agricultural, industrial and information
society. I have the chance to live in my hometown, sing KTV in cities,
stay in PUB, or surf on the net. Except for drinking Diet Coca, I have
a cheerful philosophy of life, come storm or shine, to make the best of
things as they were.
Though I am casual in life, I am careful in work. My schedule seems quite
busy, but I spent three or four hours a day in reading books. Thus, in
one year, I can read three or four h undred
books. "The man who devotes himself to work fulfills his potential."
I frequently encouraged my subordinates with, "An effective leader
should possess three kinds of hearts - broad, comprehensive, and devoted."
As a Christians, I believe that each one has a different role in his
life. It's the best performance to play this role well.
