Eight Buddha pagodas
As you reach the Ta’er Temple, the first things you see are eight Buddha pPagodas, which got its name because it was built to commemorate eight great events related to Tathagata through his life. The eight pagodas, from east to west, are Lianju Pagoda (marking the birth of Tathagata), Four Noble Truths Pagoda (also known as Dharmacakra Pagoda which marks Tathagata’s efforts in sermon and disseminating the Dharma as well as his achievements in first turning Four Noble Truths Wheel), Harmonious Pagoda (also known as Peace Pagoda which marks Tathagata’s merit in mediating disputes among Buddhist monks), Bodhi Pagoda (marking Tathagata’s merits in mediation practice), Miraculous Pagoda (marking various miracles created by Tathagata in vanquishing tirthika), Descension Pagoda (marking Tathagata’s returning to mortal world from Tavatinsa through the saint ladder), Birthday Congratulations pagoda (marking that Tathagata calculates his life span and his disciples wish him a long life), Nirvana Pagoda (marking the parinirvana of Tathagata).
The eight pagodas of Buddha Sakyamun are 9.4m in perimeter and 6.4m in height, covering an area of 5.7m2. They were built in the 41th year under the reign of Emperor Qianlong in Qing Dynasty (1776) and renovated in 1991. |
