The Great Sutra Hall is the Exotoric Buddhism Institute in Ta’er Temple. Here you can see another wonder of the temple – appliqué embroidery. Applique embroidery can be divided into two types: two-dimensional form and three-dimensional form. Two-dimensional appliqué embroidery is an elegant combination of drawing and embroidery, which enjoys both bright colors of drawing and delicacy of embroidery. It can be said a wonderful art treasure integrating two stunning art work. Three-dimensional appliqué embroidery is the perfect combination of relief and embroidery. With the solid quality of relief and delicacy of embroidery, it a wonderful art form which seems crude and ordinary but delicate and splendid.
The theme of appliqué embroidery is confined to various activities of Buddha. One-image appliqué embroidery are mostly the patterns of various Buddha, bodhisattvas, dharmapala, vajrayana, eight auspicious signs, precious horse, precious elephant and mani, while multiple-images appliqué embroidery are Buddhism stories and fairy tales. Figures, landscape, flowers, birds and animals are all made according to the plot of Buddhist sutra stories, and together with scenes in various colors, vivid styles, strong three-dimensional sense and exquisite workmanship, the Buddha statues of appliqué embroidery has been regarded and stored as a precious cultural relic by Ta’er Temple. Most of appliqué embroidery works are hung in the hall, so as to allow visitors both at home and abroad to appreciate them.
