current situation of desert in Wuwei |
Wuwei lies in the east of Hexi Corridor, in which Minqin County and Gulang County have been suffering from the desert. Minqin County is particularly invaded by Badan Jaran Desert and Tengger Desert. The dry climate and heavy storm make the ecological environment rather vulnerable. It is one of the four sources of the sandstorm in North China. The annual rainfall is only 110 millimeters, while the amount of evaporation amounts to 2646 millimeters. It is the driest area in China and even in the whole world. In the past six years, the desert has avanced to oasis by the speed of eight to ten meters per year. According to the statistics, there have been more 150 thousand mu of sand in the past five years while the oasis only takes up 5.5%. In the past several decades, the local people has struggled to harness the sand. Although there have been some achievements, the desert has not been controlled thoroughly. The damage brought by sandstorm every year can amount to more than 20 million yuan, which has very bad influence on the development of society and economy. The harnessing of the sand in Minqin County is of great importance.
