Interview with Duan Yongheng:

         Duan Yongheng was born in Huangyuan County Xi’ning, Qinghai province in 1943. He is Han nationality. He is the member of Qinghai Province Folklore Artists Institution and Huangshui River Origin Artists Institution. He started to self-teach drawing at 1957. when he was young, he liked the fine arts very much. He liked to draw the person and the natural scene. Once he was in charge of drawing the propaganda picture in Four-clear campaign,;rhyming the Great Culture Revolution poems,;painting the all kinds of Mao Zedong picture on the wall of every units within his county to popularize “the Three Loyalty”;helping to make the background picture of pattern drama hold by county culture working group; painting the county cinema propaganda picture and colorful car making scene at the art activity of production groups. In 1973, he designed the exporting carpet in National appliance factory and drew the lamp row for the county culture museum with 《the First Myth》, 《Three Kingdom Story》, 《The Story by the Water Margin》as its main contents.In 1995, he painted the scene of <Western Adventure Story> and <Red Mansion Dream> on the Gujian Gate of Beijing Oversea Chinese Hotel and the folklore person figures of the corridor of the Huang village Architecture head company in Daxing County in Beijing. He was praised the gold medal at the 120th anniversary of commander-in-chief Zhu’s birthday and the exhibition match of people honored artists, and was honored as the people meritorious artist for his painting <Dare less to all difficulties>. In the 10th anniversary of Deng Xiaoping death, he ranked first in the “Century Monument” national painting and writing exhibition match and was awarded the title of Chinese Celebrity and Contemporary Top Hundred Artists.

Questions:
1)     When did you start to learn the drawing?
Answer: I started to draw at 1957 . I won’t give it up even till today, as I like it very much.
2)     Did you taught by yourself or teacher?
Answer: By myself. Because, at that time, I was very poor and can’t afford, I decide to learn it myself as I like the fine arts ,especially the figure and natural scene since childhood.
3)     Can you please talk something about your influence exerted to the society? 
Answer: In 1973, i designed the exporting carpet in National appliance factory and drew the lamp row for the county culture museum with 《the First Myth》, 《Three Kingdom Story》, 《The Story by the Water Margin》as its main contents. Interview with Tian Juying:

        Tianjuying was born in Xining City, Qinghai Province in 1968. She is Han nationality. She started to learn the paper cutting in 1976. She is the member of Provincial Folklore Artists Institution, Cotemporary writing and fine arts Institution, Chinese Writing and Painting Institution and Huangshui River Source folklore artists Institution. Her works include: 46 Mao Zedong images from the youth to the year of Cultural Revolution;<Ten Commanders-in-chief and Ten Generals>;the Party and Government leaders; partial characters from the folk-custom;the paper cutting great man image exhibited in the Qinghai Province Museum at 2004; <Four Masterpieces>; folk legend and classic characters; the paper-cutting image for Mao Zedong, Chou Enlai, Zhu De, Liu Shaoqi, Chen Yun, Deng Xiaoping, which is shown in the “Song for the Chinese Harmony” the world Chinese spring handwriting and painting match at 2006. With the gold medal at that match, it was also exhibited at the People’s great meeting hall and Martial Museum, judged as the national treasure, collected by the organizer and titled by “ Special Art work ”. It once was ranked the first at the 120th anniversary of the chief-in-commander Mr. Zhu De’s birthday and the Meritorious People’ s Artists Handwriting and Painting Match. Her traditional Chinese painting <Dare to All Difficulty> won the title of Meritorious People’ s Artist. Her superior artworks are also awarded the golden medal at the “century monument” national handwriting and painting exhibiting match in the memorizing the 10th anniversary of the Mr. Deng Xiaoping death. Her <Four Modernization> won her the name of “the Chinese celebrity, contemporary top 100 artists”.

Questions:

1) When did you start to learn the paper cutting?
        I began to learn paper cutting since 1976, with the guidance of my mother.
2) What are the characters of the paper cutting?
        It seems no character in paper cutting. Practice makes perfect. You also need to be patient and careful in doing it.
3) Which are your main works of your paper cutting?
        Well, there are many figures, such as Chairman Mao, ten Generals, and characters in novels.
4) What drives you to join in this line?
        I have great interest in it. At first, my mother opposed me to learn paper cutting; gradually, she taught how to make it.

Interview with Yang Zenggui:

        Yang Zenggui, 64, lives in Hougou village at Shenzhong town. He works in one wood products factory in Huangyuan. This 64-year-old man has been even in this line for 51years, who is the only inheritor of the Huangyuan Lamp row artwork. Born in the peasant family in 1943, he start to the woodmaking in 1956 when he was 13. His woodmaking was equisite and attractive. He once said:” when we carve after painting, we should fix the wood board first. Or the wood will be out of the place and the whole works will be ruined.” Using his left hand, he was very careful and concentrated. We can understand his skill by looking at his facial expression: firstly painting; secondly craving, three layers inside out; last craving, also the most important procedure, need the basic ability which can adjust the craving strength according to the density of the wood.

Questions:

1)Mr. Yang, where are you from?
      I live in Hougou village at Shenzhong town.
2)How long did you involve in this line?
       I have been even in this line for 51years and started to the wood making in 1956 when I was 13
3)When did you start to make the lamp row?
       At first, I made lamp row in Huangyuan Champer of Commerce, then in Huangyuan Wood Products Factory. In 1992, I was invited to make it in local cultural bureau.
4)Can you talk to us some skill needed to make the lamp row?
      Yes, making lamp row requires both patience and physical strength. I must concentrate in making it. The procedures is like this: firstly painting; secondly craving, three layers inside out; last craving, also the most important procedure, need the basic ability which can adjust the craving strength according to the density of the wood.
